Opposition holds news conference over mass protest

                  PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald)
-- Opposition Cambodia Rescue Party (CNRP) leaders Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha held a news conference on Wednesday at Chak Angre before gathering with supporters at Freedom Park to begin their three-day protest in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

The CNRP started its three-day mass protest today on the 22nd anniversary of the Peace Paris Agreement.

The goal of the protest is to demand justice for voters and for the current government to fully adopt and respect the Paris Peace Agreement that took place on October 23rd, 1991.

Speaking at the news conference, Sam Rainsy said that October 23rd is the 22nd anniversary of Paris Peace Agreement, and it was significant for the Cambodian people because it's a day that commemorates the idea of peace for everyone.

The protest is held to seek the truth in the election and justice for voters, he said.

Kem Sokha, CNRP’s acting president, said the three-day mass protest will be held peacefully, and never encourages any protestors to commit violence.

Both Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha said that the CNRP will not take any responsibility for protestors who commit violence, they will instead be arrested and brought to police.

The opposition's three-day protest will include marches along the streets in the capital city of Phnom Penh in order to present petitions to the countries of the Paris Peace Agreement.

At the same time, Phnom Penh City Hall on Wednesday announced that traffic congestion will occur on the streets of Sothearos, Monivong, Mao Tse Tung, Norodom Blvd as well as other streets where the protestors will  march

According to the official election results, Cambodian People’s Party won majority 68 seats in parliament, while the Cambodia National Rescue Party won the remaining 55 seats.

However, the opposition rejected the results, demanding the establishment of an independent committee to probe into the election.

They believed the election contained too many irregularities that first must be solved. - See more at: http://thecambodiaherald.com/cambodia/opposition-holds-news-conference-over-mass-protest-5177#sthash.2uF01hTd.dpuf
