The Planned 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Convertible Might be Worth Waiting For

Have you been on the hunt for a luxurious large convertible? Whether you have or not, you probably can’t name many… because there simply aren’t many.
The new S-Class Convertible is part of the push toward even more luxury in the already plush S-Class vehicles. No doubt it will boast many of the same features present in the forthcoming 2014 S-Class, which will provide features like spa seating that can emulate a hot stone massage.

While this S-Class Convertible is based on the Ocean Drive Concept, which was unveiled in 2007, it drops the flat sides in favor of contoured surfaces, much like like the 2013 CLS-Class and upcoming 2014 CLA-Class, among others. It will be based on the sturdy steel frame of the S-Class sedan, which should provide plenty of stiffness. Body panels like the hood, trunk lid, and door panels, will likely be made of aluminum to save some weight. The convertible will also use the same cushy air suspension as the sedan.

Under the hood, the S-Class Convertible should come with either a burly V8 or a V12. The V8 will probably carry over from the current 2013 S550 — that means a twin turbocharged 4.6L V8 good for 429 hp. The V12 is currently available in the Mercedes-Benz S600, and is a 5.5L unit capable of 510 hp. We’re sure that either one will provide plenty of satisfaction on the road.
The only bad thing about the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class convertible will be the wait. It’s not expected to hit our showroom at Motor Werks of Barrington until fall or winter of 2015
